Black Rock

Kate Bosworth stars in the new horror Black Rock which hits cinemas this Friday (21st June). To celebrate we’ve decided to take a look at Bosworth as well as other unlikely scream queens who have graced screens with their presence.

Jessica Chastain — Mama (2013)

Jessica Chastain, who had previously starred in films such as The Help (2011), Lawless (2012) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012), made a shocking genre-change when she starred as Annabel in Mama earlier this year. The story follows Lucas and his girlfriend Annabel (Chastain) as they are left to take care of Lucas’ nieces Lily and Victoria. The girls’ father had murdered their mother and had taken them to an isolated cabin to kill them when they were saved by a ghost. When Lucas finds them, they claim to have been raised by ‘Mama.’

Hilary Swank — The Resident (2011)

Known for starring in intense dramas like Boys Don’t Cry (1999) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), Hilary Swank surprisingly starred as Dr. Juliet Bliss Devereau in The Resident (2011). The mystery thriller investigates the terrifying obsession of Dr. Devereau’s (Swank) landlord after their brief relationship. From drugging her to monitoring her apartment, you’ll be in shock as you watch her struggle to figure out what is going wrong.

Liv Tyler — The Strangers (2008)

Daughter of Steven Tyler and known for her role as half-elven Arwen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Liv Tyler was an unlikely choice to star as Kristen Mckay in The Strangers (2008). Staying in an isolated house after a wedding, a young couple (Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler) hear a knock on their door in the middle of the night. They soon find themselves under the attack of three masked strangers and are forced to go to unforeseeable lengths to survive.

Keri Russell Dark Skies (2013)

After films like The Waitress (2007) and August Rush (2007), Keri Russell had yet to wow the screen with her screams until she starred in horror film Dark Skies (2013). Russell stars as a typical suburban mother, living a quiet life with her husband and two children until they learn that a daunting, deadly force is after the lot of them.

Kate BosworthBlack Rock (2013)

The fresh-faced Kate Bosworth was a very likely candidate for her films Superman Returns (2006), 21 (2008) and Blue Crush (2002), but she definitely seems to be branching out. She stars in the upcoming Black Rock as one of three young women – Sarah (Bosworth), Abby (Katie Aselton) and Lou (Lake Bell) – who get together for a private campout at one of the iconic settings of their childhood, an empty island off the coast of Maine, to renew their bond of sisterhood. They quickly learn, though, that the island is anything but empty, when they encounter three recently-returned servicemen, who have come to the island to hunt.  A misunderstanding quickly turns to tragedy, and the three women soon find themselves the targets of the hunt. What started as a simple playdate to recall old times is now a race for survival.
